The map is excellent. I like it very much. I haven't had time yet to compare it to the older map, but what are the changes? I noticed that Sri Lanka/Ceylon is added, as well as panel 13 of course, but are there other differences?

the new cleaned-up civ map is pretty awesome. I noticed its a smaller file, which is cool. The starting locations are marked, which I dig. The Northern Europe thing looks really good, although its kinda pointless cos it has no city sites, only 3 1's and the 5 zero's. Personally I'll keep my map printed up using the 12 panels. That extra unused space in Northern Europe is a good place to put player mats, etc. My table isn't huge enough to have room for player mats if i had the northern europe mapboard. The zoomed-in blowup thing for Hellas is great, but I kinda miss the city-site on Thera. Now volcano doesn't get to happen as often.
Combining Gades and Corduba is good. Iberia got a little too easy to play in the beta map. Now they'll have to press to the west more.
The AST is pretty clean, but i kinda like the old idea of two AST's so that both east and west can be used to play a game independently. After all, you won't always have 14 players. But the coolest thing about it is, hey if you don't like one little thing, its easy to edit. You guys did all the hard work for everybody.

With Urbanism and the general shortage of city sites in the east not having lots of city sites is pretty much the norm. With agriculture northern Europe can allow a player to support more cities. It also helps link over the northern black sea.

It was also included to simply make the map a real rectangle, AND to provide potential support for a middle ages civ expansion...

Of course players can not print it if they would like ;) Its all up to them!

Actually I wouldn't have minded two ASTs... the problem being that I couldn't really make them sequential... Now I can combine them all the way it should be combined. Besides we had all that extra space in the indian ocean... :)

I'm going to go out on a limb and not worry about appearing stupid. :D

How does one go about printing something this large from a pdf? With the panels as graphics I just croped them to a printable size. I'm afraid I won't be able to print it to an accurate size from Acrobat Reader.

Thanks,

I´ve no idea how to print the map. :D I think that Adobe Distiller has tools for slicing up the vector graphics. You might want to wait a little while longer before printing it, since I do believe a corrected version is on the way up during the next couple of days.

All depends on your printer driver - I'm printing it at this very instant on a Roland SJ-540 - and the driver has a "custom postscript size", which I set to 36" wide to fit the material I'm using - works out to be about 5% reduction in size from the 38.33" width of the PDF.

Basically printing right from Acrobat Reader. In theory, you should be able to import the PDF into a drawing program (CorelDraw, or Illustrator), and then play with it. I've done something similiar with CorelDraw a few times.

Anyways, we're going to be playing a game on the new map this weekend... :)

Speaking of the Indian Ocean, is the blue terrority with the AST charts intended to be a valid open ocean terrority or not? The question came up in play: It does make a difference getting back behind Ceylon. The similiar terrority - the great sahara is clearly not a terrority to be used in play - no population marker.

I'm inclined to say that ocean *is* in play, but we had a few players in the last game on both sides.

I´d say it´s not...two clues:

1) It doesn´t have a name, something like "Central Indian Ocean".

2) If it were, wouldn´t also that area in the lower left corner, where the trade cards are allocated, also be an area? But if it were, what would be the maximum population?

I can see that the map design could be rather misleading. The alternative is marking the whole ast and trade region area with that brownish background color - but it just doesn´t look as neat. I guess it´s some sort of a trade off between aesthetics and readability.

Would it be interesting with an ocean area located there? The Indian Ocean is already quite generous; with cloth making and astronomy, one could travel all the way around the Indian sub-continent or between the Horn of Africa and Sri Lanka. The distance from the Horn of Africa to the tip of India is approximately the distance between the Straights of Hercules and the East Mediterranean Coast and it takes approximately the same time to travel in the game.

After looking at it for a while, it would be the largest open ocean area in play - if that area was in play, it should be at least two terrorities.

With it not in play, the Bay of Bengal is not accessible from Arabia or the Horn of Africa even with Clothmaking. With it in play (as is), the Bay of Bengal is accessible (assuming Clothmaking is available.)

With it not in play, Surashtra is the westernmost terrority that can reach up into the Bay of Bengal (assuming Clothmaking.)

Anyways, I'm convinced - that open ocean containing the AST isn't in play.

I agree it isn't. This can be fixed by a simple one sentance clarifier:

>>The map areas containing the AST and the Trade Card Stack are not in play.
