Commodities for more than 14 players

Ok, I'm in the process of reworking my original cards so that they match the values in the new rulebook. Where, in my opinion, someone made a better looking card, I adopted theirs (Credit for Ceramics, Clay and Ochre goes to Velusion, credit for Wax goes to Jonno)

I've only got the 1-3 point cards so far.... let me know what you think. (Warning: They are high res cards; there are over 12megs of images on the page)

http://home.comcast.net/~dcluciano/CivCards.html

For Yinsh: you had mentioned that you would be interested in photoshop files so you can translate the cards. I have them, but I dont have enough web space for it (11meg) So if you've got (or anyone else) would like to donate 50meg of webspace (So I can put up all the cards when done) that would be great.

EDIT: Ok, I just saw on the redscape forum that there should be 8 wax cards... I'll update that when I get home.

very good work DLuciano. Congratulations.
I am impatient to download the other with the correct number
I managed to translate all the cards, but now the resolution is much better, so i will do it again (it's quite easy and fast)

What are people's opinions on the set values? Currently, I am putting the values directly over the background. I don't think there is any problem as far as readability. However, on some of the cards in the original game (Cloth, for example) the background was replaced with a solid color in the set values section.

For example, compare Velusion's cards here: http://www.civproject.net/images/sample.jpg
With the ones I made.

So I can see 3 possible choices:

1. Display the background in the set values section on all cards
2. Replace background with a solid color in the set values section on all cards
3. Mix and match depending on readability

Ok, now got 1-4 up. New website (thanks to mcbeth)

http://broggs.org/zope/dcluciano/CivCards.html

I was a little over ambitious with the high res images and it was taking forever to load the page :) So I put compressed images up, but each one links to the uncompressed image, if you want it.

Eventually I'll be putting up 5-9 and the psd files.

Good work. All the cards are looking much nicer now. However, could you please use png instead of bmp and jpeg. Png is compressed without loosing any quality, and is readable by all modern browsers (4.x upwards) and imageing programs. It's bigger than a jpeg but much smaller than a bmp.

Ok... didn't realize that about png. I'll convert them sometime in the next few days.

Actually, for non-photographic images, PNG is usually smaller than JPEG. DLuciano, if you want, I can work on converting your images tonight for you.

Just wonderful.

I'll tell you when I downloaded them and registered on CD so to print them on need.

Sure... whatever is easier for you... I can certainly do it and upload them.

Thanks,

After much thought I think I'm going to mostly abandon the self-imposed limits on semi-photo realistic commodity card backgrounds. Mostly because aesthetically I prefer not to be limited. Of course... I realize that this isn't anyone's cup of tea so when Daryl finishes his traditional cards I'll host them right up along site of mine!

So whether you want fancy semi-photo realistic cards or the traditional texture only based cards you'll be able to use either!

FYI... quite a few of Daryl's traditional texture cards will make it into the civproject set because they are awesome and seem to convey the commodity better than any semi-photorealistic approach.

Well, obviously it is easier for _me_ if you do it. But I had some free time this afternoon, and converted a bunch of them. They are about a third of the original size now. If we were to drop to 256 colors or something, we could get down to a third of that, but I don't know if it is worth it (I'm not an artist)

BTW, I only did the highres images, but could do the lower-res ones if needed. DCLuciano, I just verified, and if you are a computer geek enough to know what WebDAV is, it does work with the web space I gave you.

I would do the high-res images 16 milion colors 450x713 png (as you have done) and the low-res 256 colors 225x356 gif. This would make the low-res about 1/10 of the high-res i filesize (that's a quarter of the current low-res).
If you want high-resolution you'd want the correct colors, but if you are concered about filesize 256 will do. That's just my thoughts, do whatever you would prefer.

Daryl, when you are making these can you label them as East, West or Shared (so we know what pile to throw them in a large game)? I was thinking of putting a small W, E or S in the bottom corner...

I was actually thinking about this... and had some ideas. For a more subtle change I was thinking about the symbols surrounding the main number. I was thinking of using a more eastern theme for those symbols to differentiate.

For example:
http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~histor ... erals.html
http://www.ancientscripts.com/arabic.html
http://user.dtcc.edu/~berlin/font/hierogly.htm

I had this on my to-do list. :)
