Counters: Fabrication

These are looking good but I see some appear to have relief and some are just silhouettes. Is what we're seeing the final draft?

hey I actualy did not notice that.

i prefer an ountlined picture of coins too.
AND
I would really like to see some of the color of the frontside showing on the backside.
So that when several players flip their tokens you can still see what colours they are.

From what I see I like the new illustrations!

However, there is no way I'll use coins for treasury. Many reasons, but mainly because for most of the time period, the treasury did not contain coins, but urns with mixed content.

The issue of having the national colour on the back of the tokens is also important, but even if that is solved, coins is no option. A better illustration of urns (or another, even better, idea) is very welcome though, as it's currently not obvious at first glance that it is urns on the back, though most people do see it when one explains it to them...

The backsides of the counters have a 40% opacity of the front color for those people wanting coins on the backs. It might be a good idea to put a black line around the coins, it would make them easier to see. I will do that. I'm afraid the 40% color on the back got a bit washed out in the photo.

You will be able to choose from 3 Minoan amphorae or the coins on the backs when you have these printed. I figured there would be some dissagreement with the coins, but I wanted a choice to be available. (I got used to the amphorae but initially thought they were a bit abstract). Everyone eventually gets coinage anyway.

Some counters are true silliouettes and others are a mix of shades or have some highlights. I wanted to avoid the line art that was currently in use, and not use the original images unless there was a historical reason. I was especially happy with the Indus counters (not shown yet) I have some color change proposals to make, but the counter template will let you use what ever colors you want. I would suggest that some Pantone colors be selected as the official print colors and most good photo editors will support the Pantone series. Pantone colors are more reproduceable in pint.

I have 3 civs left to do: Kushan (virtually no historical art work to use) Parthia, and the Saba. These would be done by Wed except my server crashed and I'll be spending a couple days getting it back together again.

Another delay is that I've received over $400 in orders for Civ project maps and cards, people that pay $$$ expect fast delivery. I need to quit my day job. And these people haven't heard about the counters yet.

My test with the thick counters was a failure. I'm going back to the thinner counters. The finished pieces will be .054-.056 in thickness instead of .064-.066. I have ordered some additional .75in punches for the city markers, I will use a 2 stage die-press for them - 1st step to mark and crimp rounded edge tops and the second to actually cut thru the material. I think they will be very nice when finished.

I will be sending Jonno a 300dpi counter template sometime later this week. (Still have to get the server up and finish 3 civs yet.)

still I have two doubts:

Why not the full color. Red that's getting pink by making it 40% makes no sense to me.

Why this inconsequenses? What's wrong with silhouet outlines?
or even all tokens having mixes of shades?

Well, I tried the full color on the back and it didn't look right, the 40% does turn red into pink, but since they are all that way I think it will work out. BEWARE - players that are color blind should not use sets with the coin back side! (they will all look the same!) The coin back side was an experiment that turned out OK with some things to consider, each must make up their minds if they want them or not. For the Amphorae - they will all have full strength colors on the back, as always.

As to some having shades and others not - it mostly depends on the art I have to work from. Some lend them selves to shades better than others. Oddly, the Assyrians worked out that way by accident so I made the ships to match.

Consider this set a first draft, and feel free to submit changes (suggestions or actual art) and I will update the file when I can. You are free to take the file and make your own changes as you wish.

Jonno is the ultimate approver for the final official set, so its up to him. But that doesn't stop anyone from having a custom set made up.

Craig, thanks for your work. You are providing a good alternative to the overpriced items you see on ebay. Counters are especially hard to do right for us home hobbiest.
Not to dis your art, but I'm glad you're willing to consider updated art made by others (cough, Flo, cough).

Well, I've nothing against choice, but the amphorae will be the "official" backside for the Civilization Project.

I've not looked at the colours yet, but I sure will take your suggestions in consideration.

Good for you. I'm going to make some orders myself, but not until 2.10 is finalized, so that I don't have to throw away whatever I order before even using it. I don't think I'm going to host any large games until autumn at earliest, and I'm a bit picky about using the latest and greatest...

The original AdvCiv counters is 1.5mm, and my home made CivProject counters is 1.1mm and works just fine, so I don't think going for 1.4mm rather 1.65 mm is going to be any problem.

Industrial strength solutions aside, has anyone simply tried printing the counter sheets on a full label sheet and punching the labels to be affixed to cardstock or even wooden blocks? I was able to purchase a .5" hole punch from the local art store for a couple bucks and plan on trying this method later tonight. I am fortunate to have a pretty nice hp designjet plotter here at work (that we use for network diagrams of all things normally) and my map turned out great.
