New Artwork For The Calamities

Post New Artwork For The Calamities
As I've redone the artwork for the advances, I'm also redoing the artwork for the calamities.

my goals:

1. A universal look of all calamities
2. Overall I' leave the original images, as they are mainly the right images. I'll only redraw them to get em all in one style. Maybe for some I'll draw a whole new image.

This topic was started in another topic: "Flo how about the calamities" http://www.civproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=445&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=. I've just made a new topic for this puprpose only.

Well,

even I'm not starting yet,
first I want to give a little overview on the job

This is the list of calamities

2 - Volcanic eruption or Earthquake
2 - Squadered Wealth
2 - Treachery
3 - Famine
3 - Superstition
3 - Tempest
4 - Civil War
4 - Slave Revolt
4 - City in Flames
5 - barbarian Hordes
5 - City Riots
5 - Flood
6 - Coastal Migration
6 - Cyclone
6 - Epidemic
7 - Civil Disorder
7 - Tribal Conflict
7 - Corruption
8 - Iconoclasm & Heresy
8 - Minor Uprising
8 - Tyranny
9 - Banditry
9 - Regression
9 - Piracy

That's 24 drawings. (half of the number of advances)
Though i like the original Avalon Hill pictures very much (that goes not for the new cliparts), I decide to redraw ALL of em.

Just to generate a universal look the same as the advances.
I'm also going to change the background for the commodities in the same job. I allready spend some time on that to see what could be possible.

I appreciate the time spend on the trade cards, but the thing about these cards, is that some of the cards look to much alike, but what's more important to me is that the general look of the cards are too "Plastic". I mean, too much Photoshop-FX on the cards like 'mosaic' and stuff. That just won't work for the ancient look of the rest of the game.

Sowhen I'm starting on this job, i'm going to redo all or none, At least for my own playing set, cause that's why I started drawing anyway.

Click here for a topic on only the commodities without the calamities

I'm writing a short description of each card along with the current image. If I make any mistake, or if you disagree, please let me know.

Image
Squandered Wealth.

Current image: An empty treasury chest.

Definition. Lost money.

A treasury is any place where the currency or items of high monetary value are kept. The term was first used in Classical times (800 BC) to describe the votive buildings erected to house gifts to the gods, such as the Siphnian Treasury in Delphi or many similar buildings erected in Olympia, Greece by competing city-states to impress others during the ancient Olympic Games.

New image. Redraw current image.

Image
Treachery
Current image: Trojan Horse

Famous History: Unable to capture the city after a siege of ten years, the Greeks resorted to stratagem. They sailed away and left the horse, filled with armed warriors, on the shore. Sinon, a Greek spy, persuaded the Trojans to take the horse into the city, convincing them that to do so would mysteriously make Troy invulnerable. That night Sinon let out the armed Greek troops; killing the guards, they opened the gates to the Greeks, and Troy was captured and burned.

New image: Redraw current image.

Image
Volcanic Eruption or Earthquake.

Current image: People running away from erupting Volcano. (probably Pompeii and Vesuvius)

Famous History:

In the year 79 AD the roman city Pompeii along with the town Herculaneum were a buried and ruined by the erupting volcano Vesuvius. This is famous, for the city had been under the ashes for 1700 years, which preserved the city well.

The devastating volcanic eruption of Thira has become the most famous single event in the Aegean before the fall of Troy. The eruption would have caused a significant climate upset for the eastern Mediterranean region. It was one of the biggest volcanic eruptions on Earth in the last few thousand years. (1600 BC)

The Harappan civilization mysteriously disappeared in 1900 BC, after almost 2,000 years of continuous existence. Scientists believe it has been destroyed by an eathquake.

New image: Redraw current image.

Image
Famine:

Current image: a dead cow in a hot sun.

A famine is a widespread shortage of food that may apply to any faunal species. Historically, famines have occurred because of drought, crop failure, pestilence, and man-made causes such as war or misguided economic policies.

Famous history:

In the mid-22nd century BC, a sudden and short-lived climatic change that caused reduced rainfall resulted in several decades of drought in Upper Egypt.

New image: Redraw current image.

Image
Superstition

Current Image: Solar eclipse with people being feared.

Superstition is the irrational belief that future events are influenced by specific behaviors. The historical meaning of Superstition is the fear of the gods.
A solar eclipse of June 15, 763 BC mentioned in an Assyrian text
Several religions reduced these fears.

New image: Redraw current image.

Image
Tempest

Current image: A wrecked ship and anchor.

A tempest is a violent storm.

Famous history: In some tales of Greek Mythology and the Bible tempests destroyed many ships

New image: more focus on the storm, not on the result, or redraw current image.

City in Flames

Current image: a horse and flames

Famous History:
During the night of July 18, 64 AD, fire broke out in the merchant area of the city of Rome. Fanned by summer winds, the flames quickly spread through the dry, wooden structures of the Imperial City. Soon the fire took on a life of its own consuming all in its path for six days and seven nights. When the conflagration finally ran its course it left seventy percent of the city in smoldering ruins.

The story goes that the city of Troy was burned by the greek soldiers after the capturing though the 'Tojan horse'

New image: a new image of some buldings in flames. (actually the current image of Civil war would fit perfectly, but I won't use that for C.I.F.)

Image
Civil War

Current image: at the back a building in flames, in front a few striding people.

A civil war is a war in which parties within the same culture, society or nationality fight against each other for the control of political power.

Famous history: There have been may civil wars in histroy BC. Like the republician wars in Rome (90-30 BC)and the civil war in Carthage.

New image: redraw current image

Image
Slave Revolt

Current Image. Crucified slaves and a roman soldier.

Famous history: Probably the most famous slave rebellion in Europe was that led by Spartacus in Roman Italy, the Third Servile War. (73-71 BC) This was the third in a series of unrelated Servile Wars fought by slaves to the Romans.

New Image: Th current image shows the fall of the slave rovlt and the roman soldiers taking control again. Maybe it's better to show the actual revolt. Maybe even Spartacus.

Barbarian Hordes

Current image: a couple of barbarian waririors (looking like vikings) on horses

The word "barbarian" from Latin barbarus. The word is onomatopeic, the bar-bar representing the impression of random hubbub produced by hearing a spoken language that one cannot understand, similar to blah blah, babble or rhubarb in modern English. The Greeks used the term as they encountered scores of different foreign cultures, including the Thracians, Egyptians, Persians, Indians, Celts, Germans, Phoenicians, Etruscans, Romans, and Carthaginians. Historically, the term barbarian has seen widespread use. Many peoples have dismissed alien cultures and even rival civilizations as barbarians because they were recognizably strange. The Romans indiscriminately regarded the various Germanic tribes, the settled Gauls, and the raiding Huns as barbarians.

New image: redraw current image.

Image
City Riots

Current Image: A couple of rebellions with stick

Compared to Civil Disorder, this should only be a lesser form of disorder. Historically this has been around ever since cities were formed.

New image: Redraw current image.

Image
Flood

Current image: A flooded town

Famous History:

In Genesis 7 written by Moses, God creates a enormous flood. A flood big enough to kill all the people and the animals. Noah build his ark.

Many times the Niledelta has flooded. The same for Eufrat & Tigris.

New image: Redraw current image.

Coastal Migration

Current image: Some people on ships

Coastal Migration mean people leaving the country by ship for settlement in a new world. Partly the advance "Diaspora" is the same subject.

Famous History:
The earliest migrations we can reconstruct from historical sources are those of the 2nd millennium BC. It is speculated that the Proto-Indo-Iranians began their expansion from ca. 2000 BC, the Indo-Aryan migration hypothesis suggests that they reached Assyria in the west and the Punjab in the east by ca. 1500 BC. In the Late Bronze Age, the Aegean and Anatolia were overrun by moving populations, summarized as the "Sea Peoples", leading to the collapse of the Hittite Empire and ushering in the Iron Age.

New image: a clearer image of people on ships with some luggage.

Image
Cyclone

Current image: a black field with lightning.

In meteorology, a cyclone is an area of low atmospheric pressure characterized by inward spiraling winds. A cyclone happens over water. A tornado does not. A cyclone is a tornado happening over water. A Typhoon is another word for Cyclone.

Famous history: The word may be derived from Urdu, Persian and Arabic, which in turn originates from Greek tuphon a monster in Greek mythology responsible for hot winds. The related Portuguese word tufao, used in Portuguese for any tropical cyclone, is also derived from Greek tuphon.

New Image: Though lightning is combined with cyclones, I want to put more focus on the wind, and sea.

Image
Epidemic

Current image: A town with died or dying victims of dissease

In epidemiology, an epidemic (from Greek epi- upon + demos people) is a classification of a disease that appears as new cases in a given human population, during a given period, at a rate that substantially exceeds what is "expected".

Famous history: It is understood that the development of (Roman) roads led to faster spreading of disseases.

New image: redraw current image

Civil Disorder

Curent image: A family running through the streets. Stick and stones flying through the air.

Civil disorder, also known as civil unrest, is a broad term that is typically used by law enforcement to describe one or more forms of disturbance caused by a group of people. Civil disturbance is typically a symptom of, and a form of protest against, major socio-political problems. Typically, the severity of the action coincides with public outrage.

In fact it's worse form of "city riots"

New image: redraw current image.

Image
Corruption:

Current image: A balance with a broken wage.

In broad terms, political corruption is when government officials use their governmental powers for illegitimate private gain. Misuse of government power for other purposes, like repression of political opponents and general police brutality, is not considered political corruption.

There are several forms of Corruption:

Bribe: In some countries the culture of corruption extends to every aspect of public life, making it extremely difficult for individuals to stay in business without resorting to bribes

Graft: While bribery includes an intent to influence or be influenced by another for personal gain, which is often difficult to prove, graft only requires that the official gains something of value, not part of his official pay, when doing his work. Large "gifts" qualify as graft,

Extortion and robbery: While bribes may be demanded in order to do something, payment may also be demanded by corrupt officials who otherwise threaten to make illegitimate use of state force in order to inflict harm. This is similar to extortion by organized crime groups.

Patronage: Patronage refers to favoring supporters, for example with government employment. This may be legitimate, as when a newly elected government changes the top officials in the administration in order to effectively implement its policy. It can be seen as corruption if this means that incompetent persons, as a payment for supporting the regime, are selected before more able ones.

Nepotism and cronyism: Favoring relatives (nepotism) or personal friends (cronyism). This may be combined with bribery, for example demanding that a business should employ a relative of an official controlling regulations affecting the business. The most extreme example is when the entire state is inherited, as in North Korea or Syria.

Embezzlement: Embezzlement is outright theft of entrusted funds. It is a misappropriation of property.

Kickback: A kickback is an official's share of misappropriated funds allocated from his or her organization to an organization involved in corrupt bidding. For example, suppose that a politician is in charge of choosing how to spend some public funds. He can give a contract to a company that isn't the best bidder, or allocate more than they deserve.

Unholy alliance: An unholy alliance is a coalition among seemingly antagonistic groups, especially if one is religious, for ad hoc or hidden gain. Like patronage, unholy alliances are not necessarily illegal, but unlike patronage, by its deceptive nature and often great financial resources, an unholy alliance can be much more dangerous to the public interest.

In fact, what corruption does in our game: The state loses trade goods (not tax income) to illegal parties no matter in what way. So we have to look for a form of corruption that deals in trading.

Famous history: The Roman empire is famous for its corruption. This included sexual corruption in which the higher class and emperors were involved. I guess this has nothing to do with the corruption in our game. The corruption dealing in trading and gaining luxury by the emperors for personal use is also widely described in roman history.

Wikipedia: The ancient writers and moralists wrote so much of Roman corruption, because they understood that all the changes, internal and external, in a nation, are bound together and in part depend on one very common fact, which is everlasting and universal, and which everybody may observe if he will but look about him, on the increase of wants, the enlargement of ideas, the shifting of habits, the advance of luxury, the increase of expense that is caused by every generation.

New image: I'll do some more research

Image
Tribal Conflict

Current image: A warrior with a sword ready to attack.

In fact, a tribal conflict is a lesser form of Civil War. Compared to our calamity: You select 2 area's, then from both factions a total of 5 units are destroyed.

New Image: Redraw Current image.

Hi Flo, nice to see you started.

Here is a few initial comments on your list. I'll continue to update this post as you update yours.

When you draw your images, please keep in mind that I have to place a digit (2-9) and an E/W marker somewhere on the card. Preferably, I'd love to place it at the same place in all cards. This wasn't possible with the current images, but if you have it in mind as you draw your images, that will hopefully be possible. If not, it's still no catastrophe.

Anyway, since the version of the cards with the E/W marker are going to be the "official" version, I'd prefer if you used that one of those as examples when you post your new images.

Squandered Wealth:
Redrawing of current image is fine.

Treachery:
The image should of course depicture the Trojan Horse, but if possible, I'd like it inside the city...

Volcanic Eruption or Earthquake:
I must admit I'd never liked this image very much. I think a more "zoomed out" version with more, smaller, buildings in the foreground and a large volcano would work better.

Famine:
Redrawing of current image is fine.

Superstition:
I don't quite like the current image, as it's much darker than all the other images, and placing the E/W marker was a bother, that partly ruined the image. I'd very much prefer another image, as I don't think it's possible to draw a convincing a solar eclipse without creating a dark background, which won't fit with the rest of the images.

Tempest:
I like your suggestion of a ship in a storm, rather than a shipwreck. Just make sure the image is distinct enough from Cyclone.

City in Flames:
Buildings burning would be much better than the current image. But I don't think the Civil War image would do, to much swords in that image...

Civil War:
I don't know if you can make it look convincing, but I'd prefer two groups of people killing each other inside a city. But that is probably not possible without zooming out the picture so far that the individuals can't be seen...

Slave Revolt:
I agree with your idea to show the slaves actually revolting, rather being defeated in their revolt.

Barbarian Hordes:
I'm not sure about this one, but as the Germanic tribes (especially the Gauls ) is the prototype barbarians, and not the Huns, it should perhaps not depicture riding barbarians...

City Riots:
Redrawing the current image is fine, but please don't keep to close to the original, I don't quite like it, as it deviates from the "norm" of the other cards (style-wise).

Flood:
Redrawing the current image is fine.

Coastal Migration:
The current image is worthless, but I like your suggestion.

Cyclone:
The current image is more "storm" that cyclone, the wind-bent tree is very much not sea-like, so more sea is preferable. Possibly even a ship, just be careful to make it distinct from Tempest.

Epidemic:
Redrawing the current image is fine.

Guess another superstition appearance will have to be done for this card. Eclips means darkness. This cannot be done without black. For myslef I do like the image.

I thought so. I do like the idea of a solar eclipse for superstition, but it's just too far away from the look of all the other images.

P.S. I'm back from work now, and have had the time to update my post above. Please read through it.

Agree on all:

Quote:
Treachery:
The image should of course depicture the Trojan Horse, but if possible, I'd like it inside the city...

I was also thinking of that. I found some image form the movie Troy, which will do for dummy.

Maybe you're right. also from this I found these better images. I've been in Pompeii myself that looks amazing btw. To see the vesuvious in the distance and knowing what it did.

Quote:
Superstition:

I think I draw wind for one and a twister for the other.

Quote:

No that was a joke.

Quote:

Guess I leave the orignal just redraw. maybe several times to pick the best.

Quote:
Barbarian Hordes:
I'm not sure about this one, but as the Germanic tribes (especially the Gauls ) is the prototype barbarians, and not the Huns, it should perhaps not depicture riding barbarians...

Why not. I think that's just what the calamity does in our game. They rush through your land. I like that part of the image.

Quote:
City Riots:

What do you mean?

Well, considering that one turn is 200 to 3000 years long, they don't need horses to do that. And as far as I know, most Germanic tribes didn't use horses that much. Yes, there was individual riders, but actually riding into combat was "invented" by the Huns, much later (AD).

What do you mean?

Only that the drawing style of the current City Riots is not on pair with the other calamities you are to just redraw.
Just do it with the same style as the other cards you draw, and not like the current card and all will be just fine.

oh, but redrawing means that it'll be in my style.

That is, I think for the calamities, I use a slightly different than the advances.
This is because the original (which I will use for dummy) are mostly outlines.
Is sometimes used photos as dummy for th advances, so that has another look.

But my nr.1 goal is a general look.

And this time seriously:

I found this image of gaul warriors. (offcourse whenever thinking about asterix, you cannot see this apart form that, but asterix was bases on true history. so...)

I think this image will do perfectly.
