Map without region names
Author Message
Post
One of the charms of the Civilization map (i only have the original, not Advanced), for me, was that there aren't names on the provinces. You don't run into wondering what anyone but the Romans would have called a region, and there are a lot less "historical" ties (i thought that was the point of the game!) Everything is just "this ocean" or "over here". If it wouldn't be too much trouble, i'd appreciate availability of another version of the full map without province names so it's much more resemblant to the original Civilization map.

In addition, i'm quite fond of creating my own maps, really, so is there an easy way i could manage to edit the .pdf map presented? I'd rather not drag it into photoshop and rasterize it, i'd rather keep it vector-based, but don't know what program would be appropriate for this purpose.

-thanks, nid (who is INCREDIBLY impressed with the work done here)

The areas have to be named on the map, as it is used for PBEM. (quite hard to say "over there" by email...). The original Civ map actually have official names, they are just not printed on the fullscale board.
The names on the CivProject map are supposed to be what the natives called their land, not what the Romans called them. However, as many pre-roman civilization just called their land for "the land" in one language or another, and many other names are lost in time, we often have to fall back on the Roman names, which are very well documented.
If you have better names for some areas you are welcome to tell us, and we will fix the map (though probably not very quickly :().

Actually, it wouldn't (it's just to hide a layer in Illustrator 10), and I might just do that the next time we change something. (It won't happen right now, as I don't have Illustrator installed. I would have to reinstall Windows in a new VMWare image to do so, as my 30 days trial of Illustrator 10 already has expired in my only current Windows image)

The pdf can easily be edited in Illustrator 10 (no other version will
work). If you don't have Illustrator 10 you can get the 30 days trial for Windows I use from http://jon.severinsson.net/civproject/mapboard
There you'll also find the latest (draft) version of the map, featuring corrected colors and names. (Should perhaps make that version official soon...)

Thanks a lot. I love being praised :D, though the map is mostly Martin's work.

Sorry, I had completely forgot about this thread, until I read Mark's post at BGG. Anyway, I made a version of the standard map without area names. It can be found in the archive.

Mark's Map (see link above) is gorgeous, but until I get a high resolution version, I'll have to stick with Martin's map...
