Heya!

I am going to buy civ the boardgame, but i have troubles deciding which one. Thing is I have the possibility to buy the original civ released by avalon hill. My question is.... What is the difference between the old civ and the new civ that has been released? which one is the most fun to play? Eyecandy is not of importance to me, i just would like some opinions on the fun.... Which one should i get?

Avalon Hill's "Civilization" and Edge Entertainment's "Sid Meier's Civilization" is not two variants of the same game, but rather two completely different games.
The boardgame "Sid Meier's Civilization" is a remake of the computer game with the same name, which in turn was partially inspired by Avalon Hill's "Advanced Civilization" (official expansion to "Civilization"). However, the similarities is superficial at best, and there is no specific game rules that is even that.

I have myself never actually played the board game "Sid Meier's Civilization", but from what I've heard from people who have it's not very good. So I'd recommend Avalon Hill's "Advanced Civilization", if availible, otherwise Avalon Hill's "Civilization".

A reminder - I'm pretty sure you need to own the origninal civilization to play advanced civ.

The downside is that both civ and advanced civ are very popular and have been out of print for quite some time - so they are only available on places like ebay and can be expensive.

I've never played Sid's version, but like Jonno I heard that it has some problems. I have heard that the latest version of the rules does address some things.

What worries me though is that my friends might want the eyecandy civ, ie with all the pretty plastic pieces in the new version. Sigh, I cant decide... I guess I'll see what this guy wants for his game and then decide. It also makes it hard to decide because I dont know if the old civ is fun as standalone or, like someone said, I would need to have Advanced Civ as well.

Thanks anyway! And I decided to print out the expansion civ pretty soon and try it out. It looks cool and I understand it to be an improved version of old civ + advanced civ. Hmm, maybe that answers my earlier question... Since the old game is available here, maybe I should buy the new civ?

F451, I would suggest if you're looking for a game with lots of plastic pieces try "History of the World" or "Axis and Allies" or something from Fantasy Flight games. But if you want a "Civilization" game try and get Civ and Advanced Civ. Follow the Links section on this site to "Boardgame Geek" to read more comments about the two versions.

P.S. I'm not trying to knock games with lots of plastic pieces in general, I just believe the games I listed are better games with lots of plastic pieces than Sid Meiers Civilization.

Heya!

No, eyecandy is not the most important thing for me. Since I am poor by default, I simply try to find out which game that is the most game for the money so to speak, rather then just rushing and buy sid meiers because its easier to get. (but i do love to play axis too!). Anyway, i think i have decided to print out the extended version that can be found here and go for that!

You DEFINITELY need a copy of original Civ to play Advanced Civ by Avalon Hill. However, there are ways around that. The most valuable thing in the orignal civ box is the board. The second most are the trade cards. Other than that, I think all the parts are new or replaced:

* New Rulebook
* New AST
* All new Civ cards
* Additional trade cards (to be used with the original set)
* New player mats (which reorder the sequence of play, putting 'Resolve Calamities' BEFORE 'Acquire Civ Cards'

So, if you MADE a board and complete set of trade cards from downloads here, you wouldn't need the original Civ game, which is MUCH harder to come by on places like ebay.

alright, thanks for the info! and i am going for making copies of the stuff here. I think i can do most of it for "free" at work.

and if you are looking for old civ, you can find it right now at tradera.com (a swedish ebay thing) and it right now is worth 400kr, thats maybe 35 dollars?

Just as a reminder. In the lower left corner there is this disclaimer:

Quote:
The Expansion Project is a variant of Advanced Civilization created by fans of the game. The designers of The Expansion Project make no claims to own the copyrights to Advanced Civilization.

It is expected that players that print up this variant own copies of Advanced Civilization.
