Replacement for Calendar

After all players have drawn trade cards, the holder of Calendar may declare any tradable calamities as 'non-tradable' by putting them on the table face up. The player may then draw a replacement trade card for each card placed face up. The player must experience the face up calamities as normal, and may not trade them.

That's an interesting one! In the latter part of the game, when for instance superstition has been cancelled by your civ cards, this is a good one! Maybe there should be some restriction to how many cards you are allowed to play this way.

Hmmmm... it's not a bad idea but there are two obstacles to this change.

1)I'm not really sure how the effect would translate into "Calendar".
2)I don't think Calendar is broken. In the last game we played quite a number of people still picked it up because its effects on Calamities can be strong.

I see your point. Perhaps it doesn't fit well with Calendar.

I like the idea though, because it allows a player that got a very bad draw to at least participate in the trade round. Perhaps it will fit somewhere else with a little modification.

Perhaps this would work well as a replacement power for Trade Routes. A player with Trade Routes has the power to send multiple caravans out. If a calamity hits one caravan, perhaps the other will succeed. If a player with Trade Routes draws a tradable calamity, after all other players have drawn trade cards, the player may make these calamities temporarily non-tradable for this turn and draw replacement trade cards.

I haven't forgoten about this. I still might use it at some point. Let me know what you think of traderoutes now!

The "hold +1 card" part I am thinking may not do much. Rarely have I found myself wanting to hold more than 8 cards. Then again, it might have a solid effect on play.

But the drop commodity cards for treasury is nifty and probably could be incredible.

Though, should Trade Routes have some kind of negative? Maybe aggravate Iconoclasm & Heresy? (And then add Law back as a mitagator to I&H to balance.) I&H is more about unsettling ideas and Trade Routes could certainly do that.

FYI, the writeup uses "trade cards". Trade cards are defined to include calamaties. Taking the writeup literally, it will let you dump calamaties. I would suggest using "commodity cards" instead.

(If you can't tell, terminology is one of my pet peeves :grin:)

But how does reducing the Famine and Cyclone calamities translate into "Calendar", then? After all, if there's something people have always been aware of (since the stone age), it's the seasons and their effects on nature. But perhaps there is some logic here that I'm not seeing?

And you've not put up the page explaining the Calendar card yet! ;)

I suppose Calandar stands for a detailed history of weather (sort of like an almanac) and how to deal with it. It's pretty vauge, I know, but I needed something high level to counter Cyclone, and I didn't want it to be another craft card. It's a stretch, but I think that the better people began to understand the weather and started to develop a detailed history of events some weather borne disasters became easier to manage. Calandar is simply a loosely termed Advance to represent that.

Anyone have a better name I could use?

How about Meteorology? In our modern society, we're probably giving a more advanced meaning to this word, but it actually only means "The science that deals with the phenomena of the atmosphere, especially weather and weather conditions." (http://www.bartleby.com/61/15/M0251500.html)
