New Artwork For The Calamities
Author Message
Post
I've been busy with the layout for the calamities

I took the symbol-box from the commodities and just removed the shadow, because the calamities have no 3d-feel.

I move the number to the right and put the EW-marker topleft, the same as for the commodities. In my opinion this is waht happens:

1. You recieve you trade cards and immediately you run trhough your cards.
2. Noticing you have a calamity for, say, number 5 and number 9. This is the only moment you look at the number.
3. You trade and while trading no-one cares for the number, as you look at the picture/name/non-tradable/EW-marker.
4. Once trading is done, the number comes in view again while resolving calamities.

Therefore I think, the number is not needed in topleft corner, but will do in topright corner.

When you use the unmarked set, the words 'minor' and 'non-tradable' seem out of place, thus I re-centered those for the space left without EW-markers.

I think this is the clearest option and best fit to the calamities, still staying close to the current lay-out.

As if the commodities have that...
However, I still think you did the right thing, as I see the box on the commodities as a "sticker" on top of the card, while the box on the commodities is part of the layout.

Well, you are wrong on point 3. During trade the E/W of commodities does matter (bonus value), but E/W of calamities does not (no change). However, the stack of the calamity does matter, as it is:
1. A rough indication of damage
2. A first step indicator when one holds them in hand.
Point 2 probably needs some explanation. Look this image
Image
You immediately see it's a west calamity, but you have no clue about which one. Basically, seeing the E/W marker lowers the possibilities to 24 unique cards, while seeing the number lowers the possibilities to 6 cards, of which only 3 have unique effects.
Thus I think you should move back the stack number to the topmost left, just as on the commodities (the value of 1 card = stack number). We'll have to live with two different locations of the E/W marker (almost upper left v.s. absolute upper right).

I agree.
However, I think I said earlier that I think the parenthesis around "minor" should be removed.

Yea, with the two exceptions stated above, I agree with you.

Ok, at point 3, I ment ONLY the calamities, ofcourse you look at the commidities' numbers AND EW-markers

and ofcourse the stack number on the calamities DOES matter, at any moment you Receive the card, or when you decide which calamitie to trade away. But as long as you know you have a certain calamity, you don't have to look at the number at all times.

Both my option (EW left, number right) and your option (EW right, number left) have possibilities.

I would go for most general look, and therefore put the EW-maker as close to the position of the one one the commodities as possible.

I mean, it could be a bit confusing to look for the EW marker, but you have a point in deciding. STill you could always slide and watch the whole card whenever needed

No, you don't hav eto look at them all the time, but you do look at it more often than that. For example, if you have more than one calamity, identifying them by the number is way easier than identifying them by E/W marker, so you more easily can pick the right one to send as a third card without giving yourself away.

Well, in either case the E/W symbols wouldn't match exactly, and I think that keeping the stack-level in the upper left corner on both commodities and calamities will better achieve that "general look" you are looking for.

Then I'd still put the EW-marker at the same location as the commodity, thus IN the image, rather than the topright I think.
I agree that creating a general look, also means the number topleft. But in use, I start looking topleft whenever I have more than 1 card of a commodity, otherwise looking at the center of the card (big number)

But putting this maker in the image wassometing i tried to avoid.

Other thing. You want to remove "(minor)" on all cards?
I really think it's VERY handy. Not all players know exactly what calamities are minor or major, and looking at a quicksheet when you receive cards is so obvious.

The word on the card does not anoy me.

I thought we agreed on removing "(major)" (cause that's obsolete), but keeping "(minor)"

no, no.
I just want to remove the parenthesis, "(" and ")", so it says "minor" instead of "(minor)"...

As for the general look:
There is no way we can get 100% general look, as commodities and calamities is so very different by definition. So the question is only what is "least bad". I agree that putting the E/W marker in the image is something to avoid, I just think that moving the E/W marker to the upper right is less bad than moving the stack number to the upper right.

I was about to scan my latest drawings when I realized where that burning smell I've been smelling lately near my computer came from.

My scanner just blew out its last breath.

I was looking for an A3-scanner anyway, so now that's gonna be it, my new scanner.

THUS: no new pictures at the moment.

Bad luck!

I hope that just means that you'll have lots of cards at once when you do get your new scanner. ;)

Got my new sacnner today.

I'm very happy with it. It's quicker, more silent and most important: it works.

Here are my new proposals.

I have a suggestion to rename the card "volcanic Eruption / Eartquake" to simply "Volcanic Eruption" and only mention 'Eartquake' in the rules, quickchart and advances.

Just because the name is so much longer than all others.

They al look great! Pompei does look a bit artificial though, very straight roads...

I don't like it. And I absolutely hate "Volcanic Eruption / Eartquake", it's supposed to be "Volcanic Eruption or Earthquake".
I'd try to put "Volcanic Eruption" on one line and "or Earthquake" on the next. Another option is doing three lines "Volcanic", "Eruption or", and "Earthquake". Use the one allowing you the largest font size.

ok,
I've tried, but it just will rsult in a smaller fontsize, and the only exception on the other cards.

I tried the slash to save space, but I agree 'or' is better.
