Post My Euro Civilization Game
Hi guys

It's been a while since I posted some quality input. Among other things, I've been busy working on a game I'm designing, which is a German Civ game. That's right; I'm trying to do the impossible, which is build a Civilization Game that plays in less than 2 hours, but FEELS like Civ. I'm about 90% there.

I would love to share it with all of you and get your input. I've borrowed a couple of Civ cards and trade cards from the project. Input from Core Civ players is paramount for my project and can honestly say that it wouldn't be where it is today without the influence of this site. My goal is to create a game that let's us play Civ is a few hours instead of a few months.

So, I was wondering how you all and, more importantly, the Jons felt about me posting info, rules, uploads, etc about my game entitled "Origins of Civilization". I wouldn't want to steal the spotlight or use drive space and what not without your blessing.

I would be interested in learning more about this, but I must ask, has anyone tried the game Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization? What's that like? It's a card based game right? Supposedly plays in 3 hours. Highly rated on Board Game Geek.

I've played it several times. It is basically the city micromanaging interface from the Sid Meyer branch of Civ. It is nothing like the Tresham branch. Now I have a strong distain for the Sid Meyer branch, but I do enjoy the game.

In fact the one thing that it does share in common with the Tresham branch is that you use a single resource to reflect multiple things (the tokens) and a large part of the game is balancing where those resources are placed. This has been quite popular in other games lately like Phoenicia and Origins (I truly adore the second game). On the other hand, there is much much less interaction than in games like Civ. There are three ways you interact. There is a queue of resources you can buy, and if you buy first, you can change the queue. There is a queue of global events that everybody seeds. There is an opportunity to perform an attack/defend if you have the right card once on your turn.

I would recommend at least playing the game to anyone who doesn't mind a 3-4 hour play time.

Are we now talking about Throug The Ages or about a 2 hours Civ?
Anyway, I once played Through The Ages, and my experience is that it takes much more than 4 hours, when (nearly) all players are beginners.

And about 2 hours Civ, is there a reference to the rules made? Otherwise I can't give any comment.

I only brought up Through the Ages to try and find out if Matt's new game would be anything like it. Right now only Matt can answer that, but since I knew very little about Through the Ages myself I'd though I would ask.

I was talking about Through the Ages and it has always been under 4 hours. Of course there has always been at least one player that knew what they were doing (usually me (I taught the game to a set of three different newbies 4 times at one convention))
