New Artwork for the Player Tokens

Post New Artwork for the Player Tokens
Based on new artwork made by Craig Johnson I will try to create a general look for all tokens and make styled line-art for all nations:

Here's what in business.
These are all temporary versions. Whenever I'm satisfied I'll be creating printable files from my vector illustrations.
But notice: I take my job as a whole. I don't finish one set of tokens before I've done all 18 nations, otherwise you'll have to print your own if you are in a hurry.

Please give me your opinions to get the best results.

Oh I've been busy for my job for the past two weeks working in weekends also. Now I've taken some time again to work on these tokens. But as I said: no hurries.

I'm surprised I've had no comments on the article I wrote:

Have you noticed it yet?

Oh Yeah, I've seen it it, but haven't got the time to read it

how about these new Carthage population and ship tokens:

For the ship I just added some lines in the sail and gave it a twist

OK those changes are good.

I would fill in part of the white triangles on the elephant's castle, it looks a little open, like you could see thru it.

I could use these immediately. I have people ordering counters every week.

As for the ship, I like your minimalist approach, but isn't the wind blowing the sail backwards? Easy to change tho.

How soon can you send me this material?

Craig, I'm not sending you any material, please read my posts well.

I'm only sending material as soon as I've changed the whole thing. 19x3 desings. Whenever you cannot wait, please use your own designs.

The sail-thing is just optical interpretation. Look at it for a minute and the sail comes popping out forward.

Nope, even after several minutes the sail is still backwards, sorry.

Please take alook at these pix by Dutch artist M.C. Escher for a while

note: the craters on mars are not hills.
You can also turn the pix 180 degrees to change the effect

This is exactly what's happening to my sail.

Anyone?

Still not convinced? print my pic out and show to 10 people...

I'm going with Craig here, The sails are bending toward the back (left) of the ship away from the ram. I don't know how that bend could mean anything else and still cover the center mast the way it does.

Ok, I made some sketches:

Frontview:

Image
We like to show version A

But because we take the side of the boat we choose for B
(turning the sail 90 degrees)

We really don't want C

Right?

Topview:

Image

We like to show version A

But because we take the side of the boat we choose for B
(turning the sail 90 degrees)

If choosing between C and D, we rather have C instead of D.

Right?

so I made a preview of my suggestion and Craig's suggestion
ImageImage

It's still optical illusion.

To me:
The right one is topview C and frontview B
The left one is topview D and frontview B

But I guess for another person it might be:
The right one is topview C and frontview C
The left one is topview D and frontview C

To me a sail is always bulging and not concaving on an image.
Keep in mind that you can see both images different ways
If you see - on the left image - a bulging sail, than the sail is turned backwards. (like topview D)
If you see - on the right image - a bulging sail, than the sail is turned the right way. (like topview C)

If you see - on both images - a concaving sail, than both options are wrong. (casue it's concaving)
And this way the right one the sail is also turned backwards.

So my first option is still the best to me, for I don't like a straight (sqaure) sail.

Here are some more examples of what your mind does with images:

ImageImageImageImageImage

img 1: the vertical lines are NOT BENDED
img 2: the horizontal lines are equal in lenght
img 3: look at the sail for a while. you can see the sail backwards and forwards.
img4. the image is standing still, though it looks like it's moving
img 5. Do something about it!

Since you continue to throw irrelevant links to optical illusion pictures that we have all seen half a dozen times, here goes my second attempt.

First lets start with some ground statements. We can't see the middle of the mast, the pointy bit on the right is the front of this ship (and is in fact, the ram). We agree on those two parts? Good.

Because there is no mast visible in front of the sail, both versions of the sails would have to be convex (middle of sail coming toward us). The question then becomes, is the sail top view C or D. For that, the only cue we have is ribbing of the sail. So, take your hand in cupping shape and hold it so you are looking directly at the back of the hand. Is the ribbing between your fingers straight? Good. Now twist your wrist so that the ribbing looks like this ((( . What direction does the wind have to blow the the sail to look like that? Now tilt your hand so that the ribbing looks like this ))) . What direction of the wind have to blow the sail to look like that?

Only one of those two answers has the boat moving forward, and it isn't the example on the right. Please elucidate me on where I'm wrong, as I know you are a very smart guy

re-reading your e-mail it is clear that I missed the important piece. We earlier wrote clarifying the front of the boat and you missed that clarification. We are seeing these boats the same way, but with a different interpretation of where the front of the boat is. That sharp pointy thing under the water is a ram and rams generally work best going forward into things.

I apologize if my words got a little rude in the previous e-mail, I think it is clear now where the miscommunication lies.

here's what went wrong

In my opinion the arch was the front. If I am wrong at that point, the sail indeed should be turned the other way.

Still the optical illusion-thing is no shit. this really applies to the sail. apart from what is front and back of the ship. (that says: you gotta know what's front and back anyway)

Please don't be rude. This all should be fun to do! I'm working to do best and still haven't earned any cent on this.

Apoligies accepted.

I looked it up:

ImageImageImageImageImage

I was wrong about the front and back of the ship-part. sorry about that.

this is the right one:

I will change the design.

I'm afraid I have to change my artwork for 'Naval Warfare' too

I really wasn't trying to be rude. I really appreciate all the hard work you and Craig and Martin and Mark and Jonno and anyone else I'm forgetting at the moment are putting into the art. It wasn't until you kept harping at optical illusions I could twist my brain into looking at the sails as concave which never even occurred to me.

One thing about the ram, it isn't uncommon to have a loopy thing near the front too (the most famous ones I can think of had eyes on them too), so if on naval warfare you just add a bigger loopy on the back, which it already almost has.
