During the game I hosted at GothCon Last weekend a player suggested that we rename Cyclone to "Tidal Wave", as a Cyclone is the same thing as a Typhoon, and as such shouldn't just affect coastal areas. I don't know about the rest of you, but I do like it.

Well, there is some obvious art for the card if the choice is made

Well the reasoning was that coastal cities got the brunt of the damage from Typhoons/Cyclones/Hurricans. These storms form over water and hit coastal areas the hardest (e.g. Storm Surge).

I'm not apposed to Tidal wave... though you could say that Earthquake is the same thing. And while Cyclones hit almost every coastal area, many coastal area's are relatively safe from Tidal Waves.

Instead of renaming Cyclone, I recommend making an entirely new Calamity called Tsunami. Even recnt ones as we have seen are DEVASTATING. Most are cause by undersea earthquakes, but some have alternate causes.

The Storegga Slide was an enormous post-ice age land slide that occured in Norway around 6100BC causing a megatsumani, so it might be even possible to make yet another card called Landslide, which would separate it from other tsunamis. Not a bad idea considering that the worst environmental calamaities in history were water based. The more the better if you ask me.

I guess the game has been develop this much that there will come no new calamities at this point?

The same as I said about the advances. If there is anyone with any house-rules or house-cards....
If you like my style, I would want to draw an image for any of your cards in the same style.

Flo: Just as with advances, there will be no more than the current 24 calamities for any CivProject 2.xx version, but there might be some renames and/or replacements, if someone has a suggestion better than the current cards.

I agree replacing Cyclone with Tidal Wave/Tsunami. A reason is that I miss a calamity like that.

And I don't like the art of Cyclone, but that is another discussion.

But Cyclone can be said to be the same thing as Tempest. And there are more lookalikes: Riots vs Civil Disorder; Barbarian Hordes vs Piracy.

Yes, but the damage now is far less devastating then to speak with during playing Civilization. (We've lost 'only' 1/30.000th of the world population, so it should have removed at most one token.)

If you don't like the art for cyclone, I hope you are talking the old art.

have you seen this topic:

about the tidal wave/tsunami-subject: In fact I have no strong opinion on if a calamity is missing. For myself I'm happy with the current set. As I checked this before even start drawing. I mean, before starting research and drawing I first wanted to be sure this is the set. otherwise I wouldn't start. The calamities chosen aren't just picked random disasters.

There might even be more calamities that would be missing, but you gotta draw a line somewhere. :D
Other calamities could include landslide, blizzard, lightning, avalanche, lahar, sinkhole, maelstrom, seiche, minor ice age, tornado, etc. But I don't miss em. The only two that I would miss are locust swarm and wildfire, but not much. As I mentioned, you gotta draw a line somewhere.

For the equality of some calamities:
Before starting to draw new images I first did some good research on each calamity. This way I found out the exact difference between the calamities.

city riots are some minor form of civil disorder (though only in cities) but it's a 'minor' calamity
a tempest is a sudden storm at see and a 'minor' form of cyclone.
barbarians are known to be any foreign and unknown neighbouring civilization that's just a pain in the ass, where pirates are specificly NOT of a certain civilization and are set to come from or operate at see. (therefore the later vikings are not regarded pirates although they came from the see)
Tribal conflict is a 'minor' form of civil war.

These are just a few examples of where the 'minor' calamity is introduced.
