Post subject:  Writing a computer game: a simple question

Hello all

I came across this project because I was researching the original Civilization board game. I am considering writing a computer version of the game. It's obvious from the site that the people here have put a lot of work into all of this, which is in fact a lot of work that I could benefit from if I was to write such a game.

My main question is, however, exactly what licenses are used for the artwork in this expansion? If I were to write a computer version, I would release it under the GPL v3 license (see http://gplv3.fsf.org/). This is a fairly liberal license, so I would need the license for the artwork and media to be fairly liberal as well.

My primary reason for writing such a game would be for solo play (it would obviously have to include AI players) and for e-mail play. I'm also a developer os some 25+ years, so it's not an unrealistic proposal. However, like I say I'm still considering such a project; but if I could use the resources provided here it would make the task a *lot* easier - and make it look pretty good as well!

Hey Max,
In fact, a group of friends and I are currently doing the same - though ours is primarily for network play. If you're interested in joining our group of developers, send me a PM.

A month or so ago, I asked the same question about graphics, and the responses were along the lines of:

Flo's graphics - with credit given, we can probably work something out
Map - no response
From original - need permission from Avalon Hill (good luck)
Original art from this site - ok to use.

If someone wants to correct these assertations, let me know.

There already exists a computer game of the original Advanced Civilization. However, the AI is very weak there.

I looked into the old game. It's a 1996 DOS game, so you could say it's a little bit old.

Also, it would make sense if I was to write a modern version to base it on this expansion project, what with all the nice work done on it.

Anyhow, I have pm'd FortyTwo42 and we shall we what comes of it.
