I'm playing the Variant now and I really like the map. It's very well suited to both land and sea expansion. Zeroing in on Greece and Crete like that especially focuses on the multitude of cites there. Two comments:

1. The clump of island areas around Crete, make ship travel through there unrealistically slow when not stopping at that island.

2. I would shift the map eastward to include more of Asia Minor and cut out Italy altogether; Hellas florished throughout modern Turkey and I think the map might even be better if it included more of that. Italy and Sicily seem kind of detached from the rest of the game.

First of all thanks for your comments MiracleMat, please let me informed of all the different aspects of the game you think that can be improved or you detect that are wrong during your game. I will be glad about that extra information.

The map is still a Beta and lots of things will be changed in the future.
That clump of islands will be slightly modified in a future version, to guarantee a more dinamic maritime traffic between the north and the south areas of the map. Anyway this will be carefully done ,when I draw the map I did it thinking in Cyclades islands as one of the new map hot points, and I don't want to lose that feeling. The Aegean Sea navigation was really dangerous and tricky, and Cyclades islands were always a big conflict area for most of the more powerful civilizations.
Regarding Asia Minor I think that it's one of the more developed parts of the map, with the 12 ionian confederation cities, if we would go more towards the east we wouldn't find more relevant Greek settlements ( I know some in the black sea are missing ), only that lands belonging to other non-greek civilizations ( Hitites, Persian areas,FRigia, Lydia, Hurartu ..etc ..) and that was not my intention.
Magna Graecia part of the map it's essential to reflect the importance of Greek colonism, from Cumae ( the first greek colony in Italy ) to Syracusse, the most powerfull city-reign from ancient greek world during Dyonisius Tyranny ( More than 40 years ).

Best regards.

Just finished playing as a replacement player and I have to say I really do like that map. It's one of the best combinations of land and sea. The more coast there is the more options there are for travel.

Here's another suggestion: Instead of eliminating southern Italy, how about foreshortening it. Making the boot smaller would de-emphasize it, while still retaining it's important sites. That might leave some room to extend he map into more of Asia Minor. The Ticket-to-Ride Europe map is a good example. Scandinavia is severly shrunken vertically and hardly anyone notices.

First of all thanks a lot for your comments Miraclemat, I'm glad you have enjoyed the map. My intention was to highlight the maritime part as opposed to the land part, I always have enjoyed civilization more when I have played with a mainly coastal civilization like Minoa.

I really like Ticket-to-Ride Europe!, I have the german version ( Zug um Zug Europa ) and I didn't notice that scandinavia is shrunken!, :)
I have done some little modifications to the map ( I'm still betatesting it ) but more of them are about some city positions and area values. Perhaps in the future I will do an eastern map extension to reflect those ages under the Hellenistic period, extending the map until reaching Persepolis. In the meantime if you have any suggerences to modify the current Asia Minor zone they will be wellcome.

Best regards.

Ah, Ticket to Ride: Europe...nice little game. I wouldn't say that Scandinavia is shrunk though, rather it's the usual trick of having most of Scandinavia off-map (which makes sense, I guess, since it's mostly wilderness anyway).

But it's often hard to find a suitable projection - once the actual playing spaces become to large it's usually a good idea to try to cover the same geographical area in less space (and vice versa, of course). Shrinking is always an option.
